Sanrio, the Hello Kitty manufacturer, is facing a worthy rival: Momiji doll. Based upon the traditional Japanese wooden dolls "Kokeshi", handmade by Kiji-shi (wood carvers), Momiji dolls greatly outsold its "rivals" Hello Kitty and Pukka.
Miscellany of tradition and modernity (am I turning into a poet? °_°) Momiji (maple leaf) are given as a present for special occasions: a "get well soon" wish, a "thanks" to a beloved person and even, as in the original meaning of Kokeshi dolls, to newborns to bring good fortune.
