How to cook Gohan

As you most likely know, the basic ingredient of Japanese cuisine is rice. It can be eaten alone or with fish, vegetables and much more.

   preparazione del riso semplice

Today I'm going to show you how to prepare the basic Japanese steamed rice that is generally used for every dish! Let's go!

DIFFICULTY:

  • Medium-Easy

PREPARATION TIME:

  • 5 minutes

COOKING TIME:

  • 20 minutes + 15 minutes resting time

INGREDIENTS for 4-6 people:

  • 2 cups of short-grain rice
  • 1 cup of cold water (1 cup = 250 ml)

How to cook it!

1- First of all, put the rice in a colander and rinse it well under running water. Now put it into a bowl and cover it with water, straining it afterward. Repeat the operation untill the rinsing water is nearly transparent. (you'll have to be patient...)

2- Now put your rice into a big pan (non-stick is best) and add the cold water. Place it on a hot burner. When the water is boiling, cover the pan with its lid and lower the heat. Cook it for 5 minutes and then raise the heat at its maximum for 30 seconds. Switch off the fire and let the rice rest in the pan for 15 minutes. NEVER open the lid before serving the rice, steam is essential for cooking rice in the right way.

Now you can have your steamed rice as a main dish, as a side dish with fish, meat or vegetables, or you can use it to create other Japanese dishes! Stay tuned, I'll add other recipies soon!

It's time to say: ITADAKIMASU!

Wow thanks a lot. I really need to learn how to cook. I live by myself and I wish to eat for the better. Rice is pretty good and simple to make. But I haven't heard about the added methods you use. So I will try them when I get the chance... First, though, I'd have to turn on the gas in my place again.. I got a little depressed and turned it off because I couldn't cook well. ^^; Thanks for giving me hope again. :] I'll stay tuned. Keep 'em comin'~! I'm taking plenty of notes. :D

Thanks for the Gohan recipe. I can buy Japanese rice here but since our rice cookers in India are different from the one's that they use in Japan I had no idea what to do with it. Now I can use the stove to prepare rice!
