Japanese sculpture has been a tradition for almost 5,000 years. A lot of different materials has been used: baked clay, wood, clay, bronze, lacquer, stone, and many others. They have used even modern materials from overseas such as ivory.

The first works of Japanese sculpture which have been preserved are ceramics of the period called Jomon (12,000 - 250 B.C). Being an island, Japan developed its own style autonomously at first without influences from outside, which would be received afterwards. The cord-patterned vessels of the Jomon period are very famous. They were decorated with markings and figures using sticks with cords on... [Continue...]

This time I'm going to tell you of Shinjuku and Shibuya. These sections of Tokyo are very lively and appreciated by the younger people. They're also easily reachable with the JR Yamanote. In Shinjuku we saw Hanazono, a Shinto temple of the XVII century. Due to our dedication to Inari, we just couldn't miss it. We found it thanks to the help of a kind lady working on street maintenance. While out and about we also moved through Kabuki Cho, a street crammed full of Pachinko rooms where the prices varied a lot from shop to shop.

Hanazono Temple was painted in the classical fox colours: red and white and a lot of rope was set around the altar. Right here Inari manifested physicaly in front of us as an old man came to us asking where we were from, after that he went away laughing  °°,  . You may ask what is this all for with Inari?  It's crazy. Once at the hotel we searched on the web to study the... [Continue...]

Ginza is composed of an incredible number of shops and boutiques, we went there looking for the Sony Showroom. Right there we had the chance to observe one of the most spectacular exhibitions of the Japaneses maniacal precision about time. The showroom had to open at 11 o'clock in the morning, I can't really get the opening times in Japan, we were really early so we had a walk in this block of elaborate buildings and eventually found the Apple Store.

    Apple Store a Ginza

The Apple Store was newly opened and we went inside to take a look. The Apple Store in Ginza was gigantic. 4 floors filled with Macs, iPods, accessories, a conferences room and a free internet room. A lot of people were waiting with us for the daily opening. To move from a floor to the other there was two glass elevetors, even they were in the Apple style. There was just one button, and at first... [Continue...]

Sensoji is one of the most important temples in the whole of Tokyo, in view just as you come out of the Asakusa Subway Station. You can see the great Kaminarimon, (the thunder door) that takes to the temple itself straight away. Once you step through the Kaminarimon you find yourself in a street crammed full of food and souvenir shops. Every day the street itself is packed with people walking from the Kaminarimon to the Hozomon, another gate on the opposite side of the street. Both of these grand doors are remakes of the originals, the first one built in 1960 the second one in 1964. Even so, they still preserve an ancient and powerful appeal.

Inside Kaminarimon are the statues of Fujin and Raijin, though the bodies of these teo guardians are remakes, their heads are from the originals. This is the shops street. I fonud a nice fan shop where the very kind owner taught me how to open and close the fan I bought there. ^^Here you can see the long shops street. Anything from the traditional dango to the mass produced Hello Kitty cookies... [Continue...]
